Kindergarten was never hard for me. We looked forward to it, anticipated it, relished it.
Not a single tear was shed for those kindergarten children of mine.
I knew they'd find fast friends at that age. I didn't worry about recess and I didn't need to worry about who they'd sit by at lunch because kindergartners don't have lunch at school.
Kindergarten was fun.
But Jr. High...
Now Jr. High...
Holy Moses what happened?
You turn around and they're big.
Responsible... ish.
We went to the open house at the middle school last night. The teachers were there and the kids followed their schedules from class to class so they would know where to go the next morning when it was the real deal.
Cas and I don't know the building and we had a hard time finding staircases. And then we were all turned around on the next floor.
Cas was stressing.
Finally I figured out that we should just use one staircase to orient her with and then she could feel centralized.
It worked. We found a staircase that went to all three floors and opened up at the end of the main halls.
We came home and sat down at the counter with the school map and using just that staircase walked her through her classes. That cleared up some stress for her.
Things started to make sense.
Then we went to the store to get notebooks and folders because, duh Mom, big kids need that kind of stuff for the first day of school.
The Man kissed me good bye this morning. It wasn't yet 6:15 and my alarm clock hadn't yet gone off and I was still snuggled in bed.
He says, "there are three little girls awake downstairs, and one of them is completely ready for school." And then he laughed.
Holy cow. What time did that girl wake up?
She was ready.
And calm. At least on the outside, which was more than I could say about her last night.
She's still a little nervous, but she's excited now too.
She arranged with a couple of friends from the neighborhood to walk to school this morning. I'm sure the group will grow as the year progresses. It always does.
Today is a day for 7th graders only to find their way around and handle lockers without all the other grades there too.
It's a short day, as in, not even any lunch.
It's a good way to start.
So here's to Casidee on her first day of 7th grade.
Her first day of Jr. High.
