A modge podge Memorial Weekend

We didn't have any solid plans for Memorial Weekend.  We bounced around with a few ideas.

Let's go to 5 Mile and start collecting rocks for the fire pit we want to build in the backyard.

Let's go to St. George and visit my parents.

Let's just hit a drive-in movie.

And then West ended up letting Jay and Sean go with their mom for half the weekend.

So we ended up with no plans at all.  And I was kind of okay with that.  It seemed that we'd been in a whirlwind lately with general life and a "no plans" weekend was sounding pretty good.  Especially a three day weekend.

Granny Suzann called to see if we wanted to join her at the air show at Hill Air Force Base.  We talk about going every year but have yet to actually make it up there.  We took Granny up on her offer.

Saturday morning was gloomy and overcast and we wondered about the weather.  I hadn't been watching the news recently and had no idea what the forecast was.  West said the weather on his phone claimed that Saturday would be better than Sunday.  We piled the circus into the car and hit the road.  And the rain fell.  I called my Brent-Dad who lives up closer to the base and asked him if it was raining up his way yet to which he said no.  He did mention that the news had said that Sunday would be the better for the air show weather wise.

We were already on the road so we took our chances.

Buy the time we made it to the base (an hour drive) it was pouring rain.  We're pretty sure the storm just followed us up there.  We pushed our way through traffic and onto the base were we watched people fighting the rain and the cold outside.

My enthusiasm had been snubbed out.  Thankfully, so had West's and Suzann's.  We stopped at a gas station on the base to meet up with Granny, Lindee, and Sam.

The weather was torrential.

And cold.  We visited for a few minutes and then pulled the plug on our outing.  No planes were in the air and we were drenched just running from the car to the building.

Maybe we'll talk about going to the air show for another few years, and then try it again.

On Sunday I went to church with the girls.  While sitting in Sunday School I noticed my phone was blinking green, which is West's assigned color, so I picked it up and looked at my text from him.
"Want to go to St. George?"

Where was this question on Friday?  He wants to go now that it's Sunday and we'll have to turn around and come home tomorrow?

Yes, he did.  Though he had ulterior motives.  He'd found a truss jib in Hurricane (which actually ended up being La Verkin) and he wanted to go pick it up.  Those towns are only a half hour from St. George.

So after church I called my parents.  Surprise!  We're leaving in a half hour.  We packed up our bags and hit the road.  If you ever make the drive down I-15 in Utah you need to make a pit stop in Scipio.  It's now become tradition for us.

Two times makes it tradition, right? (The first time here).  The gas station there hosts an impressive petting zoo.  And it's free to go into it.  They do have a box set up for donations, which we have always donated to because they're taking good care of these animals, and we can get behind that and help them out.

If you do stop and check it out, watch out for the zebra.  He's snippy.

The turkey creeped me out.  He is the ugliest thing I have ever seen in my life.  His face... I'm going to have to get a close up of it next time.  Also, he's snippy too.

Watch out Brynn!

Did you know that Emu's growl?  Or at least this one did.

Fending off the ugly, snippy turkey that started pecking at her jeans.

We drove to La Verkin and tried in vain to follow the directions of "find the dirt driveway with the cable across it right before the big bridge."  I happened to be driving at this point and as I made one u-turn after another I started to get vocal about "stupid small towns and their ridiculous directions," having had enough of that experienced in my time in both Quincy and Vernal.

Look at this man.  Who can stay mad at his antics for long?  Not this girl.  I don't stand a chance against that smile.

For those of you who are not aware of what a truss jib is:

All this fuss for that hunk of metal.  That will actually make West's life a lot easier at work, so I suppose that in and of itself is worth it.

By the time we were done with that, we made it to Grandma and Grandpa's for a late dinner and a round of hot tubbing before bed.

My one requirement for making such a hasty, last minute trip was that we go and see the petroglyphs that are near my parents house.

My parents were more than obliging.  So was West.

We hiked around for a little bit, trying to remember where exactly it was that we had seen them before (a long time ago).

Our instincts and faded memories finally paid off and we found them.

tune in Tokyo

Thanks to my parents who are always willing to put up with us and our antics... even on a last minute notice.

The only treat that will help you survive what seemed like three solid days in the car (counting all the driving for the rained out air show).

I think the circus was feeling the claustrophobia of spending three days in the car too.  They finally started making a hut in the backseats of the car to break up the tedium.

We stopped at West's work site on the way home to pick up... something or other.  By that point I wasn't listening anymore, though I was still happy to help make his life easier.  Plus, there was a park next to his site, so it was a welcome chance to spend some time out of the car.

What would I do without that man and his crazy ideas?  I wouldn't trade him for anything in the world.

Memorial Weekend: Crystal Hot Springs

I can't remember the first time I went to Crystal Springs . I've been going there for as long as I can remember. I tried to prep West for it. "It's old babe. It's a dump. OK, not really a dump, but it's old. I still love it though!" We got invited by a group. Mostly his dad's friends. West knew some of them, had just done a roofing job with one of them (which was when we got invited). What a crazy group it was. It's fun to people watch there, we saw a lot of, please excuse the expression, but in this case it was so very true, white trash. West decided that this was a white trash place. I couldn't be offended. I really do love the place, it's a part of my childhood. It's one of my biggest, fondest memories from growing up with my birth-dad, Brent. He took my brother and me there quite a few times, before my mom and step-dad started taking us there on camping trips with our extended family. And that's how it fell into my childhood. Day trips with Dad Brent, whole weekends with Mom KC and Dad Dick. West and I decided that as long as I don't LOOK white trash or redneck, I'm allowed to like one or two white trash/redneck things. (If you're wondering, only Crystal Springs and mud bogs fall into that category).

Saturday was beautiful. Not too hot, not cold at all. We swam, we played soccer, we had a water fight (well, actually Mike, West's dad, just got attacked) and we met our group that we were camping with. We decided to try putting the kids in a tent for the night, and they ended up loving it. Which is really good, that's going to save us a lot of hassle this summer, being able to shove the kids into a tent :). Good thing we have one big enough for all six!

The next morning, Sunday, was chilly and overcast and it didn't take long for the drizzle to start. I decided to take the circus down to the pools anyway. I have one very clear memory of playing in those pools in a big rainstorm as a kid and I loved it. I was going to be a sport and let my kids do it, same as my dad was a sport for me. West earned huge brownie points by coming. I know he didn't want to, and I didn't ask him to. Yet he did.

Needless to say, West and I stuck to the hotter tubs with the weather being what it was. Crazy me, I figured today I'd keep my hair dry... ha! The rain ruined that idea. I might as well have submerged myself, I was soaked clear through. The crazy circus didn't mind the cooler ones.
I like this picture because you can see the rain falling on the cement. West had had enough and decided he was heading to the trailer. I said I would stay with the kids. Not 30 seconds later lightning flashed at the same time as the thunder and we pulled everyone out. We spent the next four hours watching movies and packing up. Someone had told West it was going to rain clear through to Monday afternoon. We weren't going to stay just to stay trapped by rain and lightning in the trailer. Come afternoon the sun came out again though. And Lindee showed up with her boyfriend, Sam. West stayed behind to finish packing up (we were leaving in the morning anyway. We figured we'd just finish out the day and leave at bedtime instead), and I took the kids down for a round with Lindee in the water.
After dinner Norm pulled out the hand crank ice cream maker and made the kids crank out some chocolate ice cream. We roasted marshmallows and hung out around the fire until it got dark, then pulled out. It was a fun weekend, and the rain really was a bonus. Memories in the making.
