David Gray: Mutineers

There are few things that get me as excited as an email in my inbox that tells me to check out something new.

New for me, that is.

David Gray showed up in my inbox with the news that he has announced the upcoming release of a new album, Mutineers. The record is Gray’s tenth studio album.

Why am I only just hearing about him?

I had the privilege of listening to his new album before its release date, which is June 17th, and to be completely honest, I was hooked on the first song.  You can check it out in this video:

It only got better from there as each song played out on the album.  The songs are already on my iPod, and it has me looking back into his other albums to find out what I've been missing out on.  Because, obviously, I have been missing out.

To mark the news of the upcoming album release, Gray has unveiled the video for ‘Gulls’, the first track from Mutineers to be streamed ahead of release.  You can find it here.

Along with his album release, Gray will tour the UK for the first time in three years. The headline tour, commencing at Birmingham’s Symphony Hall on June 23 will include a show at London’s Royal Albert Hall on June 24. The dates follow a run of sold-out US shows across April and May and three sold-out intimate shows earlier this year at Westminster’s Emmanuel Centre. Additional US tour dates will be announced in May.

Also, I was extremely excited to see that he's coming locally to Red Butte Garden in Salt Lake City in August.  (Tickets can be bought here).

Recorded in Church Studios, London and produced by Andy Barlow (Lamb), whose brief was to not let Gray 'make the same record I’ve made before. "The result is an album that seems to fizz with the joy of its own assembly and finds Gray steering into unfamiliar territory while cultivating a pugnacious but respectful relationship with his own history. " I know I’ve done something here that has an authority that is inspiring me and I don’t have to worry about my past or any of that. The lovely thing about this is we’ve had the time to experiment, and it’s been wonderful," says Gray.'

David Gray captured the world’s attention with his breakout multi-platinum hit White Ladder, the first of three No.1 UK albums, earning him both Brit and Grammy nominations. He has continued to build on this success, with recent albums Draw The Line (2009) and Foundling (2010), both reaching the Billboard Top 10 in the US.

David Gray has established himself as one of the UK’s leading music artists both at home and overseas. Gray’s commercial success is also backed up by a critical consensus and countless accolades. His 2009 release Draw The Line was met with critical praise and garnered the artist a series of high profile television appearances, as well as two sold out tours of the US. Foundling, Gray's 9th studio album picked up where Draw the Line left off and created a new chapter of lush, soulful songs that found the artist returning to his folk music roots. Foundling debuted at #9 on Billboard's Top 200 Albums chart, marking Gray's highest release position of his career and was met with critical praise by Entertainment Weekly who described it as "all warm arrangements and real emotion," while USA Today said " 'A Moment Changes Everything’ is his most infectious single since 2000's ‘Babylon.' "

The album, Mutineers is being released on June 17th, but you can pre-order it on iTunes HERE or on Amazon HERE.
