easter weekend at sand hollow

The thing about The Man and I is that we are not particular fans of cold weather.  We don't snow ski, snowboard, snow mobile, make snowmen, snow angels or any other activity with the word "snow" in it.  We don't like to be cold.  It's great if you love doing those things, they make me cold, plain and simple.

We decided months ago that for Easter we were headed south for hopes of warm and sun.  Being as it's still spring in Utah, you never know what you're going to get.  And we were right.  We headed out with our crew on Thursday night and come Friday morning we heard that there was 3 inches of new snow at home.

We arrived in St. George a little after midnight.  My brother Bill and his family had ridden down with us in what seemed like a very long ride, and we all crashed at Dick-Dad and KC-Mom's house.

Grandpa Dick took us all out for breakfast in the morning.

Did you know that Golden Corral serves cotton candy in it's breakfast buffet?

Brynn did her impersonation of Grandpa:

From breakfast we headed to Sand Hollow Reservoir for the weekend. The temps reached in the 60s but there was a cold breeze that wouldn't stop.  We spent the day with our jackets on and checking out the scenery.

The day beach near the boat ramp was under water and we spotted a submerged picnic table.

Being as The Circus is crazy, they peeled off their shoes and socks and waded in the water a little bit to test the water.  It was freezing.

Being crazy like they are, they decided that freezing water was just the right type of water so we pulled socks and shoes back on

and got ready to hit the beach that wasn't submerged.  I stayed in my jacket, which was pleasant enough, though I had high hopes for 70s the next day, and 80s on Easter Sunday.

The Man burrying Brynn's legs

Back at camp we played games while everyone continued to get settled in.
I taught the kids how to play Uno.

While Grandma Julie handled the Trouble table.

Granny Suzann gave out cute treat bags with knick-knacks, teaching the girls to play "jacks."

Sam put an ice cream sticker on his head for sweet dreams.  He kept it there until it fell off the next morning.

Sam quotes: (Pointing at one grandma) Not that kind of grandma (and then pointing at another grandma) that kind!

(Trying to walk through deep, soft sand) I need tighter flip flops!

The next day was warmer.  We hit 70s and there was no breeze.  Now this is what I was talking about.

Grandpa Brent and Uncle Bill
Grandpa Brent and Grandma Julie met up with the Easter Bunny at Maverik while on their coffee run, so they took some of the kids back to get an egg from him.

After that we decided to head back over to that submerged day beach.  The Circus was bound and determined to stand on the underwater table.

And the water was still fah-fah-fah-freezing!

Not being one to miss out on fun, I waded in... with my clothes on.

there was some really nice scenery...

Grandpa Brent and Uncle Bill tested out the scuba diving scene.  West and I had brought our gear, but we weren't convinced that we wanted to submerge ourselves in the cold water, even with a wetsuit on.  That wetsuit still fills up with cold water before your body heat can warm it up.  And we didn't have hoods so I wasn't so sure that I was going to love the cold water around my head and neck anyway.
Grandpa Brent had a dry suit on, but didn't bring the right attachments for it and Uncle Bill in his wetsuit claimed the water to be "brisk."  Grandpa's computer recorded the water temps to be a whopping 64 degrees.

I'll pass, thanks.

Bill tried to play with Granny Suzann's dog by throwing its frisbee into the water, but the frisbee didn't float long enough for the dog to find it, it sunk to the bottom, deep enough that none of us wanted to go out into the water to find it.  So Bill donned the dry suit and found the lost frisbee, but struggled to dive down for it, the dry suit was full of air and he couldn't get himself below the surface.
Grandpa Brent finally tells him to raise his arm and bleed the air out of the suit through the sleeve.
Where was that advice 5 unsuccessful diving attempts ago?

Bill didn't touch the frisbee again after all of that.

We left the submerged beach when we got hungry, and the after lunch decided that the beach was calling our names, so off we went agan.  The temps on this day (70s) agreed much more with me so I didn't even take my jacket.

Grandma Julie and Grandpa Brent

The Man in his riding gear
West rode four wheelers with Grandpa Brent, though they have very different riding styles.  Actually, there are very few people that I know of that will follow West on the things that he does on his four wheeler.  He's crazy too.

Sean and West went for a ride with Aunt Lindee and Uncle Sam...

Sean's pretty proud of his first rollover experience.  Hey Sean, maybe you should tell Uncle Sam that it works better if it has all four wheels on the ground...
There isn't a lake camping trip that we go on where Sean doesn't getting burried up to his neck (proof here, three times in that post alone).

Cali played Mermaids the entire trip, so this was fitting for her.

We dyed eggs by lantern light and with it being outside I didn't even have to worry about dyeing my counters.  Not that the pink counters matter that much...

cousin Sam

And after the egg dyeing was done Aunt Lindee and Uncle Sam put together an awesome glow in the dark egg hunt for the kids.  It was pretty neat to step out from where we were hiding in the trailer to see all the glowing dots around the campsite.

And since Lindee is just as crazy as The Circus...

After laughing at Lindee we put the kids to bed so the Easter Bunny could do his thing.

Easter morning dawned warm.  The day would prove to settle in the 80s and we were in heaven.
I finished the Book of Mormon like I had planned to do and was struck with the wonder of the mercy of God during the last chapter of Moroni.  I couldn't imagine a better way to start the day.

Grandma Julie put together an egg hunt for the kids, which proved to be somewhat difficult.  Way to go Grandma!

and the kids enjoyed their books from the Easter Bunny

And their kites, we even had a great breeze to catch them up for the kids.  They spent hours running around with them.

Aside from Cali thinking that she'd just taken a bite out of a soap carrot (it was colored white chocolate) the kids had fun with all of their wares.

Aunt Jessica pulled out her fancy camera and we had a mini photo shoot in Easter outfits.  I took this one, I'll post her pics when she gets them all posted up for me to steal :). (The photo shoot pics are now here.)

And of course we spent more time at the submerged beach.

Grown ups started getting tired.  We'd been playing hard and sleeping not well in strange beds and sleeping bags.  Grown ups started drifting off and a few kids went with them.  Mostly the younger kids.  The five older kids were still going strong so I sat on a  large, flat rock over looking them.  I was struck with the beauty of where we were.  Hands down, Sand Hollow is one of my favorite places to be.  I was exhausted myself so I stretched out on the warm rock and slept off and on in the sun while I listened to the kids below me, imagining and playing, splashing and laughing.

It was perfect.

Uncle Bill took Sam fishing and they caught a horned lizard.  Sam was certain that he was going to take it home.  He named it Spike.  Bill told Sam to set it down and they'd check on it the next day before going home.  If it was still there that meant it wanted to go home with them.  If it wasn't there then the lizard wanted to stay in its own home.  Sam was heartbroken the next morning when he went to check and the lizard wasn't there waiting for him.

What better way to end Easter than with fire roasted Peeps.  And s'mores made with Peeps.

I'm not very good with Easter traditions, but I think this Easter turned out pretty perfect.  Surrounded by both of our families in beautiful weather.

Thanks to our family who made it so wonderful.

P.S. on the way home we found a petting zoo with a zebra at a gas station in Scipio.

Along with a first rate mini golf course that we didn't play on, as tempting as it was.
